Biographical / Historical

The Committee on Lectures of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia was first appointed in 1864. It was charged with the oversight of a lecture program in surgical pathology funded as part of the agreement made between the College and Thomas D. Mutter in 1858-1859. The committee was empowered to name each lecturer who would, originally, provide a course of at least ten lectures annually for a three-year period. The committee also set the dates of the lectures and reported on the program and financial matters. The committee was first formed of Franklin Bache, Samuel D. Gross, Joseph Leidy, George W. Norris, and George Bacon Wood; John H. Packard, the first Mutter lecturer, was appointed in 1864. In 1871, the nature of the lectureship was changed to allow one course of ten lectures within each three-year period. In 1886, the duties of this committee and oversight of the Mutter Lectures were assumed by the Committee on the Mutter Museum.
