Scope and Contents

This small collection, 1823-1835, contains four letters received by C. S. Rafinesque from various correspondents, including botanist John Torrey, and one letter written by Rafinesque to E. L. Briggs.

The letter from John Torrey describes his botanical research in 1835 while Rafinesque's letter to E. L. Briggs describes a recent journey in eastern Kentucky and touches on many personal matters.

Biographical / Historical

Constantine Samuel Rafinesque, naturalist, was born in Galata, Turkey, on 22 October 1783. He married Josephine Vaccaro in 1809; they had two children. Rafinesque died in Philadelphia on 18 September 1840.

Rafinesque published several works on botany, ichthyology, and economics. From 1818 to 1826, he was professor of botany, natural history, and modern languages at Transylvania University.
