William Osler patient records from the Hospital of University of Pennsylvania

Scope and Contents Clinical records of patients under care of William Osler in wards MM and WM at Hospital of University of Pennsylvania, 1887-1889. In addition to Osler’s notes, patient records contain notes by James Tyson (Osler’s successor in professorship of clinical medicine at the University) and two resident physicians, Joseph Leidy and L. L. Mial. Several examples of cases of Bright’s disease, dyspepsia, tuberculosis, rheumatism, and typhoid fever.

William Paul Crillon Barton manuscript on the history of Jefferson Medical College

Scope and Contents One volume (47 leaves) of an allegorical essay on the spirit of competition that existed between the Medical Department of the University of Pennsylvania and the newly founded Jefferson Medical College. A 15 page typewritten transcript is included with the manuscript.

William Pepper letters to Hampton L. Carson

William S. Playfair portraits of cases of rest treatment

Scope and Contents Before-and-after photographs of six female patients of W. S. Playfair who had undergone rest-cure treatment for hysteria and neurasthenia. Treatment included seclusion and rest, massage, electricity, and regimented diet. According to donor, S. Weir Mitchell, Playfair exhibited either the cases or, more probably, the photographs to British Medical Association. Playfair did describe four cases of this type to the Medical Section of British Medical Association, Worcester, England, 9 Aug. 1882....

William S. Wallace notes on the lectures of John Redman Coxe

Scope and Contents One volume (143 pages) of notes on materia medica lectures delivered by John Redman Coxe. Lectures are dated from Nov. 24, 1821 to Jan. 11, 1822 and cover the topics venesection, emetics, cathartics, anthelmintics, and diuretics.

William Shamburger essay on cynanche laryngea

Scope and Contents William F. Shamburger describes cynanche laryngea [acute laryngitis], its symptoms, prognosis, diagnosis, pathology, causes, and treatment, 1857. Titled "An inaugural essay on cynanche laryngea presented to the faculty of the Philadelphia College of Medicine for the degree of doctor in medicine."

William Shaw notes on the lectures of George H. B. Macleod

William Sumner daybook

Scope and Contents Daybook, [1754] Mar. 6-1756 Nov. 30, documenting medical practice in Hebron, Conn.; attributed to physician William Sumner. Daybook lists patient name, fee, and reason for visit; some accounts settled as late as 1761. Occasional personal financial transactions included. Pages 1-2 lacking. Also includes 1764 Mar. 23 note of William Sumner and 1768 Feb. 11 bond of Benajmin Sumner to William and Hannah Sumner.

William T. Taylor correspondence

William T. Taylor manuscript on maternal impressions affecting the fetus

Scope and Contents Manuscript of address to Philadelphia County Medical Society on 26 Apr. 1876. Taylor contends emotional or mental state of a mother can affect unborn child during pregnancy. He cites several examples, including spina bifida, strabismus, cleft palate, and various wounds, marks, and deformations, all connected with some prenatal sight or occurrence.
