Overview The office of the Secretary of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia was created during the organization of the College in 1787. The Secretary is the appointed officer of record. His original duties were to record the minutes and transactions of the College and preserve its documents and correspondence.

This collection includes correspondence, printed material, and photographs pertaining to Associate Fellow Robert Abbe and the custodianship of the Abbe Cabinet.

Overview John Harper Girvin was born in Philadelphia in 1869. He received his MD from the University of Pennsylvania in 1892. Girvin was the Physician for Diseases of Women, and later was given the position of Gynecologist-in-Chief, at Presbyterian Hospital. He was elected a Fellow of The College of Physicians of Philadelphia in 1897, and served as Clerk of the Gynecological Section of the College as well as Secretary.
