 Sub-Series

Scope and Contents

From the Series: The Records of the Humanism in Medicine Program spans from 1986 to 2007. The collection consists mostly of paper materials (with some mixed materials) involving speaker lectures or artist exhibitions offered at The College of Physicians of Philadelphia (CPP) during these years. The bulk of the paper materials include printed email correspondence between CPP and visiting scholars/artists concerning the logistics of their presentation at the College, any corresponding promotional items, RSVPs, and speaker evaluations related to their event. Researchers interested in the arts and humanities in conjunction with medicine will appreciate learning about the body of work presented by past speakers and artists at the CPP. The section records might also spur researchers to further investigate these featured speakers and their contributions to society.

The collection includes eleven series: Correspondence; Mara Zepeda Papers; Finance; Advisory Board; Meetings; Programs; Visiting Scholars; Speaker Surveys and Evaluations; Medical Articles, Publications, and Poems; Medical Related Photographs; and Recorded Visiting Scholar Lectures.

Series I: Correspondence ranges from 2003 to 2007. The sub-series include: a) Visiting Scholars; b) Schools; and c) Hotels and Caterers. The series and sub-series consist largely of emails from CPP recruiting potential visiting scholars as well as medical schools to attend humanism programs. Additional emails cover topics such as caterers used for speaker events and hotels used for speaker’s accommodations.

Series II: Mara Zepeda Papers range from 2005 to 2006. The former CPP employee acted as the Coordinator for the Arts & Humanities Programs during this time. Her papers include emails and meeting minutes, as well as her resume.

Series III: Finance ranges from 2004 to 2007. The series includes files relating to the Section’s budget (funding proposals, drives), POs, and CRs. Other documents pertain to visiting scholars: grants, POs, CRs, reimbursements, and expenses. The series also contains emails concerning CPP’s medical student open house.

Series IV: Advisory Board ranges from 2005 to 2006. The series includes board meeting minutes and general correspondence, background information on candidates and members, and general information relating to the operation/administration of the Advisory Board.

Series V: Meetings range from 2005 to 2006. The series includes minutes from the Section’s 2006 steering committee meeting.

Series VI: Programs range from 2003 to 2006. The sub-series include: a) Exemplar in Humanism Award and b) “Saving Faces.” The series and sub-series consist of all aspects regarding speaker programs: correspondence, public relations, RSVPs, checklists, timelines, goals, logistics, overviews, memos, and calendars.

Series VII: Visiting Scholars range from 2003 to 2007. The sub-series include: a) Rafael Campo; b) Rita Charon; c) Jack Coulehan; d) Lester Friedman; e) Perri Klass; and f) John Stone. Materials on scholars include biographical info, CV, interviews, and any press.

Series VIII: Speaker Surveys and Evaluations range from 2005 to 2006. The series holds medical school interest surveys and speaker evaluations for Stone, Coulehan, and Charon.

Series IX: Medical Articles, Publications, and Poems ranges from 2005 to 2007. The series contains material published by visiting scholars as well as other medical related articles.

Series X: Medical Related Photographs were published between 1986 to 2002. These color copy photos of “medical curiosities” were used as handouts for a speaker presentation.

Series XI: Recorded Visiting Scholar Lectures range from 2006 to 2007. Mixed materials include: 1 DVD-R; 4 CD-Rs; and 5 cassettes. Recorded lectures are from Campo, Coulehan, Klass, Stone, “What’s in a Face,” and “Transformative Surgery.”
