 Collection
Identifier: MSS 2/322

Scope and Contents

The collection contains an account book, 1866-1872, and a casebook, 1864-1871, documenting the medical practice of Philadelphia, Pa. physician Harry Flickwir Baxter, 1844-1901. Items found interleaved in the casebook were removed and placed in folders. Series 1 contains the account book, 1866-1872. All accounts are listed under an individual, and the volume has a name index. The account book lists the patient, his or her address, services rendered and their cost, and payments made. The service provided is usually described as a visit. Occasionally, more description, such as vaccination of a child, is given. Most payments are recorded as cash. The casebook, 1864-1871, is in series 2. The volume is titled "Tabular view of the practice of the eastern division of the third poor district, arranged so as to show the condition of affairs monthly." The boundaries of the division are given as Chestnut Street (north), South Street (south), Broad Street (west), and the Delaware River (east). The casebook is arranged chronologically, and each entry lists the case number, date, description of the patient, diagnosis, and outcome of the case. Each patient’s description includes, at a minimum, the name, address, ethnicity, age, and gender of the person. The outcome of each case is coded, and the code’s key to the code is provided on the first page of the volume.
