Scope and Contents

This collection consists of two daybooks, 1835 Feb. 1-1839 Aug.
25, and 1839 Aug. 26-1845 Dec. 31, describing the medical practice
of John A. Hyde in Freeport, Maine. The daybook entries are
chronological and provide the patient's name, a brief description
of the medical treatment, and the charge involved; for a birth,
the sex of the child is also provided. At the end of the entries
for each year, Hyde lists his annual earnings and the number
of births for that year. Receipts, bills, and other loose items,
spanning 1824 to 1846, are located in the front of both volumes.

The front and back pages of the daybooks contain lists of household
items, agricultural products, and medical supplies; the date
of purchase and the price of the items is included. Also present
are brief notes providing the name, salary, and dates of employment
for hired workers.
The loose items consist primarily of receipts and bills for medical supplies, most of which were purchased in Portland, Maine. Of special interest are the minutes from a meeting of the "Whigs of Freeport" (7 September 1844). Also of note is a receipt for twenty five dollars (15 June 1844) for the sale of Hyde's pew in the Meeting House of the First Parish in Freeport.
