Receipted bills, 1857-1867, for purchases and services, including chairs, printing, wages of curator and attendant, and rent of room at Pennsylvania Hospital. Bills include holograph signatures of officers, including J. M. Da Costa, Samuel D. Gross, Edward Hartshorne, S. Weir Mitchell, John H. Packard, William Pepper, and Alfred Stillé.

Biographical / Historical

The Pathological Society of Philadelphia was organized by Samuel D. Gross in 1857 to study pathology and exhibit specimens and anatomical drawings. Gross was the society’s first president. The membership was composed of residents, active non-residents, non-residents, and correspondents. By 1871, all meetings of the society were held at the College of Physicians of Philadelphia.
