Biographical / Historical
The Pathological Society of Philadelphia was organized in Philadelphia
by Samuel D. Gross and other notable physicians, including R.
LaRoche, Addinell Hewson, and S. Weir Mitchell, on 29 September
1857. It was formed to promote the study of pathology through
the exhibition and discussion of specimens. This is currently
[1991] an active organization.
The officers of the Pathological Society of Philadelphia included a president, vice president, secretary, recorder, treasurer, and curator. There were also several standing committees, such as committees on publication and morbid growths. Most of the meetings of the society were held at the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. The categories of membership of the society were: resident, non resident, corresponding, and life. Although its scientific sessions were open to visitors, only society members could attend the private sessions where business was transacted.
