Scope and Contents

The collection contains annual reports, membership information, financial material, and proceedings of meetings, 1923-1952, of the Section on Public Health, Preventive and Industrial Medicine of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia.

The contents of folders 1 through 4 were originally in a single volume but disbound during processing. The records, maintained by Section clerks, consist of: an alphabetical list of members, 1923-1935; the Section's cashbook, detailing receipts, including dues, and expenditures along with annual financial reports, 1923-1941; annual reports of the Section filed with the College, 1923-1940, describing the year's program, election of officers, and membership and attendance statistics; correspondence of Alexander Heron Davisson, Section Clerk, with John H. Girvin, Secretary of the College, 1923-1933, concerning election of officers, appointments to the Section's Executive Committee, and procedural matters; and minutes, 1923 May 18-(1939?] Nov. 23, detailing both the business and scientific sessions of the Section. Minutes from meetings in 1936 and 1937 include abstracts of the scientific sessions and subsequent discussions.

The contents of folder 5, correspondence dating from 1937 to 1939 and 1941, as well as annual reports from 1952, were mis-housed with records of the Committee on Publich Health and previously catalogued as 10d 134.

Biographical / Historical

The Section on Industrial Medicine and Public Health was established by the Council and President of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia on 4 April 1917, at the request of thirty Fellows, including John B. Deaver, G. E. De Schweinitz, William W. Keen, John B. Roberts, and Alfred Stengel. The work of the Section was purely scientific and intended to present programs on matters of public and industrial health concerns.

In 1923, the name of the Section was changed to the Section on Public Health and Industrial Medicine; in 1935 or 1936, a more inclusive name, the Section on Public Health, Preventive and Industrial Medicine, was adopted. Due to declining membership, the Section was disbanded in February 1971.

The source of this collection of records of the Section on Public Health, Preventive and Industrial Medicine is unknown, but it was in the Historical Collections of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia by 29 July 1959.

The records were disbound, rehoused, and processed in 1991.
