The Section on Basic Sciences of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia was established in 1977. The section, which was organized through the efforts of Dwight B. McNair Scott and H. Phelps Potter, held its first meeting on 22 March 1977. The purpose of the section was to hold lectures and seminars that would inform physicians about the latest developments in the basic sciences. The physicians who participated in these programs were frequently eligible for continuing education credits.

The first chairman of the Section on Basic Sciences was Earle H. Spaulding, who served from 1977 to 1979. In 1979, Dwight B. McNair Scott became chairman and served until 1980, when Kenneth R. Cundy assumed the position. Cundy was chairman until the section was dissolved due to low membership in 1985.

In 1990, former chairman Earle II, Spaulding, with the approval of former section members, closed the section's bank account and used the remaining funds to endow a journal in memory of George I. Blumstein through the S. Weir Mitchell Associates program.
