Scope and Contents note

This is a collection of approximately 650 2" x 2" black and white slides. Slides depict objects and illustrations related to the history of medicine, and include portraits and caricatures, medical conditions and treatments, buildings and shops, and instruments and prostheses. Slides were used by Dr. Leaman to illustrate his lectures on medical history given at the Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania and elsewhere.

Biographical/Historical note

William Leaman (1898-1973) was a Philadelphia heart specialist and professor of medicine at the Medical College and Hospital of Pennsylvania. Leaman graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1922. He was professor of medicine and head of the department and cardiologist at the Woman’s Medical College from 1942 until his retirement in 1963. He was the author of numerous medical books and articles, and the editor of Cardiovascular Briefs for Pennsylvania Medicine. Leaman was a Fellow of the College of Physicians, chairman of the Section on Medical History and a member of the Executive Committee.
