Scope and Contents note

This collection includes materials relating to Wolman's roles as a physician, researcher and professor. Present are general patient files with exam reports, lab reports, and correspondence with referring physicians; along with College of Physicians of Philadelphia meeting agendas (1921-1946), and a small number of office files, including photographs of Hematology Department parties. Materials relating to Wolman's research activities include Cooley's Anemia patient files containing histories, test results, slides, and summary sheets for the Cooley's Anemia survey; and articles, reprints, charts, and reports related to milk and its relation to disease, the digestibility of various forms of milk, and the health effects of homogenization of milk. The collection also contains reprints and drafts of articles by Wolman; reference files by subject (including reprints and articles); correspondence; and records of Wolman's patents. There are four volumes containing theses directed by Wolman.

Biographical/Historical note

Irving J. Wolman (1905-1978) received his M.D. from Johns Hopkins in 1929. Wolman was professor of pediatrics and hematologist at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and head of the Department of Pediatrics in the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate Medical School. Wolman also served as Editor-in-Chief of the medical journal Clinical Pediatrics. In the 1960s, Wolman became known for his research into sickle cell anemia and Cooley’s anemia. He was also known for his work in the 1940s proving the nutritional value of homogenized milk. Wolman was elected in 1942 as a Fellow of the College of Physicians.
