Scope and Contents
This collection of 54 letters, 1951-1954, to Walter B. Shelley
from dermatologists around the world, contains biographical
information which was used in Shelley's Classics in clinical
dermatology (1953). Most of the correspondents convey photographs
and information on their own life, career, and work or that
of relatives.
Correspondents are: Stuart D. Allen, Paul Blum, Aldo Castellani, Helen O. Curth, Niels Danbolt, Oskar Gans, Henri Gougerot, Sir Archibald Gray, Sven Hellerstrom, Erich Hoffmann, C. Guy Lane, J. E. R. Biographical / Historical
Walter Brown Shelley, dermatologist, was born in St. Paul, Minnesota,
on 6 February 1917. He married physician E. Dorlinda Shelley
in 1980; they have three children.
Shelley received his B.S., 1940, Ph.D., 1941, and M.S. and M.D., 1943, from the University of Minnesota. After an internship at Henry Ford Hospital, he came to Philadelphia and became an instructor in dermatology at the University of Pennsylvania in 1946. From 1950 to 1980, he was a member of the Department of Dermatology and Syphilology at the University of Pennsylvania, rising from Assistant Professor to full Professor. From 1965 to 1980, he was chairman of the department.
From 1980 to 1983, Shelley was Professor of Dermatology at the Peoria School of Medicine in Illinois. In 1983, he became Professor of Dermatology at the Medical College of Ohio.
Shelley was also a consultant in dermatology to Philadelphia General Hospital, 1960-1965, and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, 1965-1980.
He is a member of many dermatological organizations, including the American Dermatological Association and the American Academy of Dermatology; Shelley was also a president of both organizations. He was elected to fellowship in the College of Physicians of Philadelphia in 1954.

The collection was donated to the Historical Collections of the
Library of the College of Physicians by Walter B. Shelley on
18 December 1961. Originally, the collection contained six
photographs which were removed; their present location is unknown.
The letters were catalogued in the Autograph Collection.
