Scope and Contents

The Deborah Wexler collection of immunization posters contains posters collected during Wexler’s time as executive director of the Immunization Action Coalition (now Immunize.org). Included are posters directed toward healthcare workers, such as one showing the anatomic sites for immunization, and many aimed at encouraging patients to vaccinate their children. Some posters depict recognizable characters, including an enlarged Peanuts strip in which Lucy and Linus get their Measles vaccines; a series of posters produced in partnership with the CDC and Dr. Seuss Enterprises which urge vaccination in Seuss-ian rhyme and illustrations; and a poster in which C-3PO and R2D2 ask “Parents of Earth, are your children fully immunized?”

Biographical / Historical

Deborah L. Wexler is a family physician in Minnesota and the founder and executive director emerita of the Immunization Action Coalition, now Immunize.org. The organization, founded in 1993, provides immunization information to healthcare professionals and patients to increase immunization rates and prevent disease. Prior to her retirement, Dr. Wexler edited multiple publications, including Needle Tips, Vaccinate Adults, and IAC Express and was responsible for the development of more than 250 educational brochures, manuals, and other materials regarding immunization. She has been recognized for her work with the CDC’s Partners in Public Health Award for her efforts “instrumental in achieving high levels of routine infant hepatitis B immunization,” and she also received the Immunization Champion Award from Every Child By Two (now known as Vaccinate Your Family).
