Ledger, 1827-1832, with occasional entries and settlements of accounts to 1838, of physicians Gideon Leeds and James C. Fitch, in partnership in Warren County, N.J. Includes accounts with towns of Oxford, Knoulton, and Har[d]wick. Index to account names included. Pages 118 and 119 contain running summary accounts for partners, and first and last five pages of volume contain daybook accounts, 1827-1829.

Biographical / Historical

Gideon Leeds, New Jersey physician, was born in Danbury, Conn., in 1787. He studied medicine in Connecticut, then attended Rutgers Medical College in New York. He came to Hope, N.J., to assume to practice of Henry Palmer in 1813. He entered into partnership with James C. Fitch, circa 1827, and their practice extended through Warren County, from Columbia to Danville. Leeds died of gangrene of the arm in Marksboro, N.J., on 11 Feb. 1837. James Clark Fitch was born in Greensburg, N.Y., on 7 Nov. 1792. In 1816, he moved to Warwick, taught school, and studied medicine with a Dr. Young. He also attended courses at the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Fairfield, N.Y., in 1825 and 1826. He came to Hope, N.J., circa 1827 and entered into partnership with Gideon Leeds. Fitch was known for his obstetrical work. He married Sarah Drake in 1831; they had six children, including two Philadelphia physicians, George D. Fitch and Pelatiah Fitch. James C. Fitch died on 22 Mar. 1884. Both Leeds and Fitch were active in the Warren County District Medical Society. Leeds was its first treasurer (1826-1827) and second president (1828-1829) ; Fitch was a licentiate of the society in 1828 and its secretary from 1847 to 1889.
