Biographical / Historical

William Zentmayer, Philadelphia ophthalmologist, was born on 28 Oct. 1864; he was the son of Joseph Zentmayer, optician and instrument maker. Zentmayer died of angina pectoris on 18 Mar. 1957. Zentmayer received his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1886. In 1887, he was Chief of the Eye, Ear, Nose, and Throat OutPatient Department at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. From 1901 to 1928, he was Attending Surgeon at Wills Eye Hospital. He was also Professor of Diseases of the Eye in the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Medicine. Zentmayer was known for his surgical work on extraocular muscles. He was a president of the American Ophthalmological Society and elected to fellowship in the College of Physicians of Philadelphia in 1894.
