Biographical / Historical
Henry Willard Williams, Massachusetts ophthalmologist, was born on 11 Dec. 1821 in Boston. He died on 13 June 1895 in Boston. Williams received his M.D. from Harvard University in 1849. In 1850, Williams organized Harvard's medical students into a class for instruction in eye diseases. He lectured at Harvard in the university, 1866-1870, and then the medical school, 1870-1871, before becoming Professor of Ophthalmology, 1871-1891. Williams was also Ophthalmic Surgeon at Boston City Hospital, and Consulting Ophthalmic Surgeon at Perkin's Institute and the Massachusetts School for the Blind. He was a founder and president of the American Ophthalmological Society.
