Scope and Contents

One typescript volume ([5], 75 leaves) of surgical cases presented by John B. Roberts at the Woman’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Cases dated 1 Oct. 1897 to 15 April 1898. Preliminary leaves include index of diagnoses and notes on preparatory measures for an operation.

Biographical / Historical

Sarah Edith Ives received her M.D. from the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1898. In 1914 S. Edith Ives Cogan set up private practice as an ophthalmologist in Wakefield, Mass. She was certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology Examinations and was a member of the New England Ophthalmology Society and American Medical Association. Cogan retired by 1950 and died in Cambridge, Mass. on 26 April 1957.

John Bingham Roberts (1852-1924), Philadelphia surgeon, received his M.D. from Jefferson Medical College in 1874. He then trained at Pennsylvania Hospital from 1875 to 1877. He was a leading figure in the foundation of the Philadelphia Polyclinic and School for Graduates in Medicine and was Professor of Anatomy and Surgery there until the Polyclinic merged with the School of Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania in 1918. He held many local appointments as Surgeon and lectured on surgery at the Woman's Hospital of Philadelphia and Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania. Roberts was very active in professional societies. He helped organize the Philadelphia Academy of Surgery. He served as Vice-President of the American Surgical Association (1889 and 1895) and was President in 1921. He assembled a collection of photographs and autograph letters of every Fellow of the ASA. Roberts was elected to Fellowship in the College of Physicians of Philadelphia in 1878.
