Scope and Contents

Chronological record of Gamaliel Bradford’s medical practice, 1819 Sept. 12-1822 Dec. 31 (gap, 1821 Mar. 11-Aug. 1) in Boston, 1819-1820, and Cambridge, Mass., 1820-1822. Entries list patient attended, reason for visit or procedure, and fee charged with notes on settlement of the account. Includes monthly summary of accounts. Includes occasional notes from Gamaliel Bradford, including one, dated July 1821, where he specifies accounts which, in the event of his death, are not to be pursued by his executors, and another, 1 Jan. 1823, where he resolves to keep future accounts in ledger format. Volume also includes Bradford’s accounts, 1824-1826, from estate of his father, Gamaliel Bradford (1763-1824). Also includes one folder of newsclippings, primarily poems, and miscellaneous material, 1825-1851, but generally undated.

Biographical / Historical

Gamaliel Bradford, Massachusetts physician, was born in Boston on 17 Nov. 1795. He married Sophia Blake Rice and had at least one child, banker Gamaliel Bradford (1831-1911). Bradford attended Harvard University and received an A.B. in 1814 and an A.M. and M.D. in 1819. From 1833 to 1839, he was the superintendent of Massachusetts General Hospital. Gamaliel Bradford died of an epileptic seizure in Boston on 22 Oct. 1839.
