Scope and Contents
Clinical records of patients under care of William Osler in wards MM and WM at Hospital of University of Pennsylvania, 1887-1889. In addition to Osler’s notes, patient records contain notes by James Tyson (Osler’s successor in professorship of clinical medicine at the University) and two resident physicians, Joseph Leidy and L. L. Mial. Several examples of cases of Bright’s disease, dyspepsia, tuberculosis, rheumatism, and typhoid fever.

Overview
Dr. William Ridge Cooper was born in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, in 1862. He graduated from Jefferson Medical College, worked in his father’s medical practice, and later established his own. Cooper died in 1925.
The William R. Cooper postcards date from February through December of 1893. There are ten postcards in the collection, all from patients reporting new cases or requesting visits from Cooper.

William S. Playfair portraits of cases of rest treatment

Scope and Contents
Before-and-after photographs of six female patients of W. S. Playfair who had undergone rest-cure treatment for hysteria and neurasthenia. Treatment included seclusion and rest, massage, electricity, and regimented diet. According to donor, S. Weir Mitchell, Playfair exhibited either the cases or, more probably, the photographs to British Medical Association. Playfair did describe four cases of this type to the Medical Section of British Medical Association, Worcester, England, 9 Aug. 1882....

Manuscript of address to Philadelphia County Medical Society on 26 Apr. 1876. Taylor contends
emotional or mental state of a mother can affect unborn child during pregnancy. He cites several
examples, including spina bifida, strabismus, cleft palate, and various wounds, marks, and deformations,
all connected with some prenatal sight or occurrence.
