The Joseph McFarland papers consist of two collections and documents Dr. McFarland’s medical career, particularly his involvement in parotid tumor and tetanus vaccination research from 1900 to 1943. Dr. McFarland was born in Philadelphia on February 9th, 1868, and received his M.D. degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1889. This small collection consists of handwritten notes and letters. The first few pages of notes are written on the backs of scrap Army Field Service: Infectious Diseases forms, and include subsequent handwritten addendums with notations on where they belong in the notes. The letters indicate that Bradbury and Krumbhaar intended their findings to be shared with authorities in the management of the Influenza Pandemic, and through publications.
