At a meeting of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia
held on 27 November 1956, Richard A, Kern made a motion
"that a Membership Committee be created for the purpose of
recruiting qualified physicians for Fellowship in the
College". On 29 January 1957, a "Special Committee of the
College of Physicians for Promoting Proposals for Membership
in the College" was established, and Roy W. Mohler was
appointed to chair the committee.
Over the years, the name of this committee changed from the "Special Committee on Proposals for Membership" to the "Committee on Membership" to the "Committee on Fellowship". The Committee on Fellowship became a standing Committee of the College of Physicians in 1972. The by-laws of this year state that the Committee on Fellowship "shall seek candidates for Fellowship and help process their nominations" and "investigate every candidate for Fellowship thoroughly".
As of 1992, the Committee on Fellowship remains an active body of the College of Physicians. According to the 1990 by-laws, this committee "shall receive all nominations for admission to Fellowship...investigate in strict confidentiality the ethical, personal and professional qualifications of each candidate [and] recommend...plans for the enhancement and strengthening of the College's Fellowship".
