Volume documents Jonathan N. Faust’s education at Jefferson Medical College, 1866-1867, and contains recipes, Faust family genealogical material, and miscellaneous material, 1867-1881. Pages 167 contain notes on medical clinic of J. M. Da Costa and surgical clinic of Samuel D. Gross and notes from lectures of John B. Biddle on materia medica; Samuel H. Dickson on practice of medicine; Robley Dunglison on institutes of medicine; William H. Pancoast on anatomy; B. Howard Rand on chemistry; and Ellerslie Wallace on obstetrics. Notes are primarily dated Oct. 1866 through Apr. 1867. Pages 68112 and 156161 contain recipes and prescriptions, many copied from printed sources, as well as Faust’s notes on Henry Hollembaek’s American eclectic materia medica (pub. 1865). Several recipes in German. Faust family genealogical information and copy of will of Peter Faust (d. 1793) are on pages 113115. Copy of 1855 constitution of Frederick Sunday School Association on pages 118122. Poem, concerning Susanna Cox, "Neues frauenlied", on pages 125-131. Pages 133-138 contain copy of constitution of American Mt. Zion Sunday School and extracts from minutes of school board, 1851-1854.

Biographical / Historical

Jonathan N. Faust was born circa 1842. He received his M.D. from Jefferson Medical College in 1867 and was practicing medicine in Zieglerville, Montgomery County, Pa., by 1874. He had at least two children, John Nelson and Lizzie. Jonathan N. Faust died at Zieglerville on 14 Apr. 1902.
