Scope and Contents Ledger documenting medical practice of Thomas B. Anderson in Hanover and Caroline counties, Va., 1842-1843; some accounts settled as late as 1845. Lists patients, occupation, reason for visit, prescriptions, and settlement of accounts. Includes daybook, 1843 Jan. 1-Mar. 11. Several patients were slaves and plantation overseers.

Overview Thomas Bond was an American physician and surgeon. He was born May 2, 1713, in Calvert County, Maryland. In 1751 he co-founded the Pennsylvania Hospital, the first medical facility in the American colonies, with Benjamin Franklin, and also volunteered his services there as both physician and teacher. Madill's daybooks (1857-1892) spans almost his entire professional career and gives a comprehensive view of the daily practice of a country physician in the towns of central Bradford County, Pennsylvania. The daybook entries are chronological and provide each patient's name, a brief description of the medical work, and the charge involved. Thomas Hewson notes on the last illness of Dr. W. S. Coxe

Scope and Contents Describes lifestyle and habits of William Smith Coxe, then his symptoms and Hewson’s treatment. Includes findings from autopsy of Coxe, performed twenty-four hours after his death on 20 July 1837. Cause of death not specified, but Coxe suffered from orchitis (an inflamed and enlarged testicle).
